Care Guides for Every Piece
Different metals and stones require different care. Select your jewellery type below for a tailored care routine.
Gold is a naturally durable metal but it can scratch, tarnish and lose its lustre if not cared for properly. The higher the karat, the softer the gold — 24K gold is the purest but most susceptible to scratches, while 18K and 22K offer a balance of beauty and durability.
- ① Wipe with a soft lint-free cloth after every wear to remove skin oils and perspiration.
- ② Clean monthly in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap. Use a soft toothbrush on engraved areas.
- ③ Rinse thoroughly and dry completely before storing — moisture accelerates tarnishing.
- ④ Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Use the original Azul pouch.
- ⑤ Remove before applying perfume, hairspray, lotions or sunscreen — chemicals dull gold rapidly.
- ⑥ Remove before swimming — chlorine weakens gold alloys and can cause cracking over time.
- Soft cloth wipe after every wear
- Mild soap + warm water monthly
- Never use abrasive cleaners or toothpaste
- No chlorine, bleach or harsh chemicals
- Store separately in a soft pouch
- Polish with a gold polishing cloth quarterly
- Professional clean annually at Azul
Diamonds are the hardest natural substance on earth, but they are not indestructible. They can chip if struck at the right angle and they attract grease and oils — which is why they lose their sparkle over time. Regular cleaning restores their brilliance.
- ① Soak in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap for 20–30 minutes monthly.
- ② Gently scrub the diamond and setting with a soft toothbrush — pay attention to the underside where grease collects.
- ③ Rinse under warm running water and dry with a lint-free cloth.
- ④ Inspect prongs regularly — loose prongs can lead to stone loss. If a prong feels sharp or catches fabric, bring it in.
- ⑤ Avoid touching the stone directly — skin oils instantly create a greasy film that dulls sparkle.
- ⑥ Do not wear during heavy manual work — a sharp blow to the girdle can chip a diamond.
- Soak & soft brush monthly
- Handle by the band, not the stone
- Check prongs every 6 months
- Store away from other diamonds (they scratch each other)
- No ultrasonic cleaners for fracture-filled diamonds
- Remove during heavy-duty activities
- Annual professional inspection at Azul
Sterling silver (925) naturally tarnishes when exposed to air and moisture — this is a chemical reaction, not a defect. Tarnish appears as a dark or yellow film on the surface and can be easily removed with the right care routine. The best prevention is regular wear and proper storage.
- ① Polish with a silver polishing cloth after each wear to slow tarnishing.
- ② For heavier tarnish, soak in warm soapy water and gently polish with a soft cloth.
- ③ Dry completely before storing — even a little moisture accelerates tarnishing.
- ④ Store in an airtight zip bag or the Azul silver pouch with an anti-tarnish strip.
- ⑤ Keep away from rubber bands — rubber contains sulphur which rapidly blackens silver.
- ⑥ Never use toothpaste — it is too abrasive and will scratch the surface permanently.
- Polish cloth after every wear
- Store in airtight pouch with anti-tarnish strip
- No rubber, no perfume, no bleach
- Regular wearing actually slows tarnishing
- Use silver-specific polish for heavy tarnish
- Never use toothpaste or abrasive cloths
- Keep away from direct sunlight and heat
Platinum and palladium are among the most durable metals used in jewellery. Unlike gold, they do not lose metal when scratched — instead the metal moves, creating a natural patina over time. Many collectors prefer this lived-in look, but it can be polished away professionally if desired.
- ① Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush every few weeks.
- ② Rinse thoroughly and dry with a lint-free cloth.
- ③ The natural patina that develops over time is normal — it can be polished away by our team if preferred.
- ④ Platinum is hypoallergenic and resistant to tarnish — it requires less maintenance than gold or silver.
- ⑤ Avoid exposure to chlorine — although more resistant, prolonged exposure can still cause damage.
- ⑥ Palladium is lighter than platinum — treat it with the same care but handle gently as it can be slightly more susceptible to bending.
- Warm soapy water every few weeks
- Natural patina is normal and desirable
- Does not tarnish like silver or gold
- Hypoallergenic — safe for sensitive skin
- Professional re-polish restores mirror finish
- Avoid chlorine and harsh chemicals
- Annual professional check at Azul
Precious stones — emeralds, rubies and sapphires — each have unique properties that affect how they should be cleaned and stored. Emeralds in particular are often treated with oils or resins that can be damaged by ultrasonic cleaners or harsh chemicals.
- ① Emerald: Wipe only with a damp soft cloth. Never use ultrasonic cleaners — they strip the natural oils used to fill inclusions. Store away from heat and direct light which can fade colour.
- ② Ruby: Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Rubies are hardy (Mohs 9) but avoid heat treatment at home. Untreated rubies can handle ultrasonic cleaning; treated ones cannot.
- ③ Sapphire: The most durable of the three (Mohs 9). Warm soapy water and a soft brush works well. Most sapphires are heat-treated and are generally safe with ultrasonic cleaning.
- ④ Store each gemstone piece separately — harder stones like sapphire and ruby will scratch softer ones like emerald.
- ⑤ Avoid exposing any precious stone to sudden temperature changes — thermal shock can cause cracking.
- Emerald: damp cloth only, no ultrasonic
- Ruby: warm soapy water + soft brush
- Sapphire: warm soapy water + soft brush
- Store each piece separately
- No sudden temperature changes
- No chemicals, bleach or harsh cleaners
- Professional cleaning recommended annually
Bridal and special occasion jewellery often features intricate settings, multiple stones and fine workmanship that requires extra care. These pieces are typically worn less frequently, which means proper storage between occasions is as important as cleaning.
- ① Clean your bridal set professionally before and after the wedding day to ensure maximum sparkle.
- ② Store in the original Azul box, wrapped in acid-free tissue paper, in a cool dry place.
- ③ Apply all perfumes, hairsprays and makeup before putting on your jewellery — never after.
- ④ Remove before the first dance, swimming or any activity that risks snagging or impact.
- ⑤ Check all stone settings after the wedding — dancing, hugging and general activity can loosen prongs.
- ⑥ For pieces worn rarely, take them out of storage every few months, wear them briefly, then clean and re-store — this keeps metal from becoming brittle.
- Professional clean before & after the event
- Store in acid-free tissue in original box
- Jewellery goes on last, comes off first
- Check all prongs after wearing
- Remove during dancing and activity
- Air out and re-clean every few months in storage
- Annual inspection and repolish at Azul

Your Care Kit
The single most important tool. A microfibre or jewellery polishing cloth removes oils and light tarnish without scratching. Use after every wear.
A drop of pH-neutral dish soap in warm (not hot) water is the safest at-home cleaning solution for most gold, diamond and platinum jewellery.
A clean, soft toothbrush or dedicated jewellery brush reaches into engraved areas, behind stones and between links that a cloth cannot reach.
Store each piece in its own soft fabric pouch or compartment. Contact between pieces causes scratching — even gold scratches gold.
Place these small strips in your jewellery box or with silver pieces. They absorb tarnish-causing gases and significantly slow the tarnishing process.
Bring your Azul pieces in once a year for complimentary cleaning, polishing and prong inspection. We catch small issues before they become costly repairs.
Frequently Asked Questions
For everyday pieces, wipe with a soft cloth after each wear and do a deeper clean with warm soapy water once a month. For pieces worn occasionally, clean before and after each use. This prevents oil, sweat and product build-up from dulling the finish.
We recommend removing all fine jewellery before showering. Soaps, shampoos and conditioners leave a filmy residue on stones and metal that dulls their appearance over time. Hot water can also loosen adhesives used in some stone settings. It takes just a moment to remove and the habit protects your pieces significantly.
This is tarnish — a natural chemical reaction between sterling silver and sulphur compounds in the air. It is not a defect. Tarnish can be easily removed with a silver polishing cloth or a gentle soak in warm soapy water. To prevent it, store silver in an airtight pouch with an anti-tarnish strip and wear it regularly — frequent wear actually slows tarnishing.
Ultrasonic cleaners are effective for some jewellery but dangerous for others. They are safe for most diamonds, sapphires and rubies (untreated). They are NOT safe for emeralds, opals, pearls, turquoise, or any stone that is fracture-filled or treated. They can also loosen stones in older or delicate settings. When in doubt, bring the piece to us — our professional cleaning is always free for Azul customers.
Stop wearing it immediately and bring it to us. A loose stone is at serious risk of falling out and being lost. Our goldsmiths can re-tip prongs, tighten bezel settings and re-secure stones quickly and affordably. This is exactly why we recommend annual inspections — we catch these issues early.
Clean the pieces thoroughly before storing, then place each item in its own soft pouch or compartment in a jewellery box. Add anti-tarnish strips for silver pieces. Store the box in a cool, dark, dry location away from bathroom humidity. For very long-term storage (over a year), consider wrapping pieces in acid-free tissue paper. Bring them out every few months, wear them briefly, then clean and re-store.
